Magic Is Might, Part 1

[Thank you for visiting The Wrock Snob and reading this article! I’d love for you to jump right into the reviewy goodness, but first there is some unfortunate business to take care of. It is not in my nature to tell you specifically what or what not to buy and who to support – I tell you what I thought about an album, and if my tastes seem to align with yours, you might want to heed my suggestions. However, I must take this time to personally exhort that you do not monetarily support the bands The Remus Lupins or Ministry of Magic. The full reasons are unsettling and possibly triggering, so please proceed with caution, but if you want the full details click here. Simply put, it has been revealed that certain member/s of both bands did destructive, upsetting, and highly problematic things. While I can see the value of reviewing art no matter what the artist did on a grand society-level scale, I cannot morally allow myself to condone the financial support of these monsters, nonetheless exhorting people to do so. Now it is entirely possible this copypasta’d retroactive warning was placed on a negative review, making this sidebar somewhat moot, but I still feel it necessary to make these matters clear. Again, for full details and rumination click here, otherwise, please enjoy the article.]

Welcome to the first installment of my look at Ministry of Magic’s new album, Magic Is Might!  Before you ask, all this will culminate in one regular style review – I just have so much to say about this album that instead of posting one massive review that goes off in a billion different ways and is an absolute chore to read, I’ll just do what I talked about in the previous article instead!  First up – my entirely pictorial review of the first third of Magic Is Might.

The Hero, Pt. 2

My Baby

The Curse

Lily

In case you couldn’t tell, here is my review of the album thus far:

See ya on Wednesday, or possibly Tuesday.  We’ll see.  Wrock Snob out.

You and I had the exact same thought on “Lily.” I saw the video and went “Wait.. what?”

Luke + Kristina do not = MoM.

Seriously? Just because only one or two of the band members are featured in its video doesn’t mean it’s not representative of the band as a whole. Luke is a pretty crucial member of said band. Plus, by that logic, the This Town video isn’t MoM either, since it’s just Luke and Ryan, and neither is the House Song video, because it features non-band members singing in it.

Now you’re just TRYING to find stuff to complain about.

I don’t get the MoM hate in all these comments, especially these snarky passive-aggressive comments from you, Lena, since I always thought you were their friend.

I really enjoy the song, but I think it belongs on an All Caps album. I agree with Snobby on this one.

I can take criticism from my friends, so I’m sure MoM is okay with a little criticism from me.

Also, part of that “like” was just for Syrup Tits’ name, so…

    Umm…

So when do we get to read the review? Because this seems to have taken about 2.3 seconds of your time. Come on! Where’s the snappy 2000-word articles about how much you dislike everything?

I was forwarded to your site, pretty hilarious. You had me at “Magic Is Might, Part 1 and 1.5” but lost me by the second paragraph of “Magic Is Might” part 2. It reminded me of the Twilight movies: long drawn out flirting but never any consummation. I wanted to respond with my own graphic review, but your comments won’t allow graphics. A less creative (but still satisfying) graphic review of your blog can be seen here: http://www.discogs.com/viewimages?release=1692635
on a serious note: to all the fans that think we’re too good for you now: we appreciate you, we always have. We try to do well by you, but alas we are mere mortals.
    cheers!

Firstly, thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed the sillier articles! Secondly, you might wanna click the link at the end of Part 2, but I can’t blame you for not making it (though maybe it’s just me, but I find rants about juice hilarious). Also, you could always make images and link em in the comments! But yeah, wordpress does sorta suck that way.

I kind of agree about “Lily.” It should be an ALL CAPS song. I mean there’s nothing wrong with having a MoM song that only has some of the band members singing in it, and there’s nothing wrong with Kristina singing in a MoM song (she’s done it multiple times before this), but with only Luke and Kristina singing (and appearing in the video) and only Luke writing the music it just sounds a lot more like an ALL CAPS duet than a MoM song and I think it should have been saved for the next ALL CAPS album.
