Top 10 Things I Am Looking Forward To At LeakyCon Portland

Hey, wizard peeps. So, probably not as much in-depth content next week, as I will be spending the latter half of the weekend attending LeakyCon Portland (trekking all the way from my moonbase on the moon to attend, no less). There will still be a Snobby Sundays article over on the ‘pedia, and next week will be post-Leaky coverage. After that I will continue my usual shouting into the void (with occasional commentary by Russ/Brad/Sam).

Anyways, the LeakyCon Portland schedule was (finally) released recently, so here’s the 10 things I am most looking forward to.

10. The 5k Run/Walk

Now, while I will not be officially attending this event, I will be renting a Vespa (much more Portland than a Segway) and riding along behind the mass of jogging nerds with my roommate’s traditional Hungarian whip (and possibly his giant jar of paprika as well), making sure everyone steps lively. Also, a heads up for anyone who wishes to attend this event but ends up becoming institutionalized between their plane touching down and Thursday morning, the Psych Wards in the city each have an average hallway length of 75 meters, meaning that with only 20 laps you can have your own First Annual 3k Walk/Walk (running is not permitted on the ward)!

9. The LGBT Meetup

This is a worthy subject for a panel/meetup, and is sure to be a great event. But hey, for those planning to attend, did you know that those pansies at the Slash Meetup are having their event at the exact same time, probably in an attempt to siphon attendees away from your meetup? I think you should totally instigate a full-scale invasion of their meetup in retaliation.

8. The Slash Meetup

This is a worthy subject for a panel/meetup, and is sure to be a great event. But hey, for those planning to attend, did you know that those assholes at the LGBT Meetup are having their event at the exact same time, probably in an attempt to siphon attendees away from your meetup? I think you should totally instigate a full-scale invasion of their meetup in retaliation.

7. The Wizard Comedy Jam

Remember that one time Paul DeGeorge came to a con and instead of doing a Harry and the Potters show he just told lame wizard-themed jokes for half-an hour? This looks to be something like that, but with a MoonChild and Andrew Slack. Expectant mothers and those with a low pun tolerance are not advised to attend.

6. Wizard Rock Concert (Thursday Night)

For the first night of wrock, we got MoM, Alex, Tonks and the Aurors, Lauren, and the person who won that Leaky Stars thingamabob. This looks to be an interesting mix of high-octane (MoM, Tonks), and more emotional, probably acoustic-y stuff (Lauren, possibly Kirstyn). I am most interested to see what kind of set-list Alex pulls out – at least a couple wizard rock songs are guaranteed, and probably one or two off of that Hunger Games EP, and other SuperWhoLockHungerThrones stuff. Personally, I would be most excited to see him pull out some stuff from that old Lost band. Are we still allowed to talk about Lost? Or do we just kind of collectively pretend that never happened?

5. Wizard Rock Concert (Friday Night)

This night’s mix is more one of theme – Thursday’s concert will be comprised of almost entirely wizard rockers or ex-wrockers, while Friday will be more mixed – there’s people like local band The Doubleclicks, Rae Sterling, and Hank Green, alongside JFF, Whompy, and of course, Harry and the Potters. This also promises to be a great event, and I can’t really think of anything particularly snarky to say. Um… “Doubleclicks? You know that with the browser-fying of desktop UI and the rise of mobile UI being integrated into desktop that doubleclicking may soon become a thing of the past? Pshaw.” There, that’s something.

4. There are two competing panels with “shit” in the name

making shit

3. Saturday’s panel schedule

If you look at Saturday’s panel schedule, you’ll notice that it’s packed to the fucking gills, so naturally, there’s going to be panels and events that will be woefully under-attended (such is how these things just go). This is the perfect opportunity to cruise the convention center looking for empty or nearly-empty panels to see if you can completely change the subject/seduce the presenter/turn the panel into a Ke$ha sing-along/make the presenter run out of the room crying. Later this week I will post a scoring guide for this event (Professional Panel Heckling) – be sure to tweet me your high scores!

2. The Last Pottercast

Whether or not you listened to Pottercast back in the day, whether you were more a fan of the Muggle boys (and where’s their con, hmmm?), you cannot deny Pottercast’s influence on the Harry Potter fandom. Just a quick recap of some of the things Pottercast introduced to the Harry Potter world: The Harry Potter Alliance, Steve Vander Ark, Frak (one of the most sought-after album cover artists in the wrock world), Dawlish, Jingle Spells, Harry and the Potters, filking, Alex Carpenter, Poufsouffle, fan-made DVD commentaries, Accio Deathly Hallows, Moochka, The Claymation Deathly Hallows Movie, Starkid, Tonks for the Memories, Chipotle burritos, a legitimized news source and fan resource that hosted trivia, games, fan artists, authors, and creators, and was in many ways to the Harry Potter fandom at large what the ‘pedia is to the wrock fandom, but more so, and Mr. Blood.

I have honestly been wondering if the Pottercast Trio was still doing shit, so I’m not surprised to see that they are finally bringing things to a close (after how many years? At least 7?), but it is a definite end of an era, and will not be an event to miss.

1. I’M FINALLY GONNA GET A FUCKING SNITCHWICH

I DON’T FUCKING CARE WHO I HAVE TO BRIBE/BLOW/MURDER, I’M GOING TO FUCKING CATCH ONE IN MY MOUTH AND NONE OF YOU CAN STOP ME
